Grief Stitching is the ritual of allowing needle, thread and fabrics to companion us in our grief and loss journey. It is free stitching; inviting the threads to navigate their way through the fabrics, for hands to intuitively establish their own rhythm of up and down, in and out, push and pull. The cloth and needle know what to do: stretching & releasing thread, holding the tension, making knots, allowing loose ends, there is no right or wrong way to stitch. It’s giving your hands free range to express all that needs expressing. Maybe it’s noticing the sensation of stitching, the experience of creating, inviting awareness and yet changing nothing. Just taking this time to be present for yourself and allowing the stitching to unfold at its own pace.

Grief Stitching is an intentional form of slow stitching which is informal and free in its style, it is traditionally done one stitch at a time. It’s imprecise, messy, unstructured. Overlap pieces, cut wonky, incorporate frayed edges, skew pieces on angles, tear the fabric up. Release all thinking and sink into the making of the stitches.

Every since time began, peoples have turned to creativity to celebrate, mourn, mark significant occasions and milestones, remember seasons and express their individuality. Most times people created collaboratively or alongside one another. If you are navigating grief and loss, and feel alone, I facilitate Grief Stitching groups both in person in Brisbane and online.

A blessing for you: May all your threads become pathways and what you create become a container to hold the things that you were never meant to hold.
